Prenatal Care Basics
Women’s Health • Medically reviewed January 2026by the Cedarcrest Health clinical content committee
Regular prenatal care is one of the most important things you can do for a healthy pregnancy. Early and consistent visits allow your care team to monitor your health and your baby’s growth, and to catch potential concerns early.
What to Expect at Visits
Early in pregnancy, appointments typically include a review of your health history, blood tests, and a discussion of what to expect in the months ahead. As the pregnancy progresses, visits often become more frequent, including checks of weight, blood pressure, and the baby’s growth and heartbeat.
Your care team may also recommend certain screening tests at specific points in pregnancy. These are offered to give you information and options, and your provider can help explain what each test involves.
Everyday Habits That Support a Healthy Pregnancy
- Take a prenatal vitamin as recommended by your provider.
- Attend all scheduled appointments, even if you feel well.
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and unnecessary medications during pregnancy.
- Ask about safe levels of physical activity for your stage of pregnancy.
- Reach out promptly with new or concerning symptoms rather than waiting for the next visit.
Every pregnancy is different, and your care plan will be tailored to your health history and how the pregnancy is progressing. Open communication with your care team helps ensure nothing important is overlooked.
