Winter Safety: Falls and Driving
Seasonal & Safety • Medically reviewed February 2024by the Cedarcrest Health clinical content committee
Winter in the Allegheny Highlands brings snow, ice, and shorter days, all of which raise the risk of falls and driving accidents. A little extra preparation can go a long way toward staying safe through the colder months.
Preventing Falls on Ice
- Wear boots or shoes with good traction on icy walkways.
- Take short, shuffling steps and keep your hands free for balance rather than in your pockets.
- Use handrails on steps whenever available.
- Keep walkways and steps at home salted or sanded during icy weather.
- Allow extra time so you are not rushing across slick surfaces.
Safer Winter Driving
Before winter arrives, have your vehicle checked, including tires, brakes, and battery, since cold weather is hard on all three. Keep a small emergency kit in your car with items such as a blanket, flashlight, and phone charger in case you become stranded.
When roads are snowy or icy, slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking or turning. If conditions are especially poor, consider delaying travel until roads have been treated.
Falls and driving accidents are a leading cause of winter injuries, particularly among older adults, but many are preventable with a few precautions.
